Taiji Chen Sword
23 July 2022 (5 hours)
Saturday 10:00 - 16:00
Full fee £45 (Concession fee £35)

This course offers an invigorating day learning the beginning part of the Chen Taiji Jian (Sword Form). The sword or Jian is the oldest of the traditional weapons. As an extension to the hand forms, the sword form stretches and strengthens the joints of the body and makes the postures more open and expansive. In this way the Qi or energy is extended beyond the hand. Flexibility in the wrists and hands, lightness of footwork and agility in the waist are hallmarks of the sword form. This Taiji sword form develops the internal twining of the Chen forms. When performed correctly and gracefully, it is said to resemble a dragon swimming through water.

Throughout the class exercise options and adaptations suitable to all levels of ability will be offered by the tutor. Advice will be given on safe and effective techniques to comfortably perform the moves, gently increasing flexibility and mobility. Students should either have experience of dance or Taiji/Qigong.

Unwind by learning this soft/internal martial art. Taijiquan, literally translated as 'Supreme Ultimate Fist', originated in Chen village and the style taught in this course is Chen style. This is a complete exercise system or discipline for the body and mind that develops the flow of energy or ‘qi’ around the body and promotes internal strength with physical, mental and spiritual balance. This discipline requires regular practice in order to improve focus, awareness, co-ordination and posture. The aim of the course is to introduce taiji or a meditative practice into your daily life.
